Gastrointestional Distress
Minor gastrointestional side effects may occur from taking a calcium citrate supplement. These may include constipation, a bloated feeling, belching and flatulence (gas). Other symptoms or side effects that may be reported are nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and a decrease in appetite. Taking the supplement with food rather than on an empty stomach may reduce signs of gastric disturbance.
Headaches
Headaches may be experienced while taking a calcium citrate supplement. They may be eased by lying down.
Irregular Heartbeat
According to the Mayo Clinic, this supplement has been associated with an irregular heartbeat along with the sensation of warmth or flushing and sweating. If these symptoms occur, medical attention is required.
Increased Urination
Urinary effects also may occur. These include an increase in urine output or pain upon urinating. A doctor should be consulted if these effects are experienced.
