What Is the Parathyroid Treatment for Osteoporosis?

Parathyroid is a hormone that helps regulate the amount of calcium in the blood. A synthetic form of parathyroid hormone, teriparatide (brand name Forteo), is an injectable prescription medication for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Potential

Bone is a living tissue that is continually being broken down and built back up. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) stimulates both of these processes.

Function

When parathyroid hormone is given in small, periodic doses, it stimulates the buildup of bone without causing the breakdown of bone tissue.

Time Frame

Patients should inject teriparatide once daily for a maximum of 2 years. After that, doctors usually prescribe a bisphosphonate, such as Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel or Reclast.

Benefits

Teriparatide increases bone mass in both the hips and spine and decreases the likelihood of fracture.

Side Effects

Side effects of teriparatide include dizziness, joint pain and leg cramps. Because teriparatide can cause a drop in blood pressure, you should inject teriparatide in a place where you can sit or lie down if you need to.

Warning

People who are at risk for developing bone cancer should not use teriparatide. Tell your doctor if you notice nausea, weakness or fatigue, which are signs of too much calcium in your blood.
