Elliptical machines consist of a pair of pedals mounted on cranks and swing arms; as the user moves the swing arms and pushes on the pedals, the cranks turn a flywheel inside the elliptical's base unit, providing resistance. On some models of Proform elliptical, a pair of small wheels guide the pedals back and forth along rails installed on the base unit. Occasionally, these wheels may wear down or break, requiring the installation of replacement components.
Step 1
Kneel next to the left side of the elliptical. Remove the bolt or screw that secures the rear of the left pedal to the left pedal crank. Detach the washers and cosmetic cover from the end of the crank, then pull the pedal free. Disconnect the right pedal from the right pedal crank in a similar manner.
Step 2
Remove the bolt set that connects the front of the left pedal leg to the left swing arm. Slide the bolt set free and remove the two wheel covers. Detach the front of the pedal leg from the swing arm and remove the left wheel. Remove the wheel from the right side of the elliptical in a similar manner.
Step 3
Dampen a work towel with clean water and a small amount of dish soap. Wipe both bolt sets clean, then apply a fresh layer of machine grease to the surface of each set. Use the work towel to wipe away any dirt or grime that may have accumulated over the surface of the base rails.
Step 4
Insert a replacement wheel into the bottom end of the left swing arm. Fit the front end of the left pedal into the bottom end of the left swing arm. Reinstall the left wheel covers and left bolt set. Repeat with the right wheel, right swing arm and right pedal.
Step 5
Fit the left and right wheels onto each of the base rails. Slide the wheels back and forth to confirm that both will move freely along the rails.
Step 6
Reattach the washers and cosmetic cover onto the end of the left pedal crank. Fit the rear of the left pedal onto the left pedal crank. Reinstall the previously removed bolt or screw to secure the left pedal to the crank. Reconnect the right pedal to the right crank in a similar manner.
