At their peak of creamy, sweet ripeness, raw bananas are luscious, yet their cost to our waistlines averages around only 100 calories. But transform them into a warm banana fritter, and their calorie count rises considerably.

Origins

Bananas originated in Malaysia. Travelers transported the fruit west to India, and from there, Alexander the Great eventually introduced them to the Western world, according to Banana.com. The banana fritter recipes we know and love today were created by African and Jamaican cooks. Generally, the ripe bananas are mashed and folded into a mixture of flour, sugar, eggs, butter and sometimes rum and then deep-fried until golden brown and sprinkled with sugar.

Statistics

According to FatSecret, the calorie count in a 2-inch long serving of banana fritters is about 111 calories, with 6.9. of total fat. Percentage-wise, 39 percent of a banana fritter is carbohydrate, 55 percent is fat and 6 percent is protein.

Baked Banana Fritters

A more nutritious alternative is to roll a whole ripe banana in egg white and sweetened, spiced bread crumbs and bake it in the oven. The total calorie count for one baked banana fritter is 225, but only 30 of those calories are from fat, and you get to eat the whole banana.
