Herbal remedies have been used for centuries to treat the symptoms of depression. Many herbs and their benefits can be traced back to ancient Greece. Research is currently being conducted on herbal therapies and their efficacy. Some herbs may conflict with other medications or vitamins you may be taking. Gingko Biloba

Valerian

Valerian is commonly used to treat sleep disorders, anxiety and depression. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)suggests that consuming valerian may also help elevate your mood. The roots are used in several forms of the supplement -- tablet, capsule, liquid extract or tea. Consuming valerian can be done safely for short periods of time, such as up to four to six weeks.

Rosemary

Rosemary is a pungent, woody herb that you can enjoy fresh or dried. Adding a little rosemary to your entree will add a delicious flavor and provide several health benefits. Inhaling the strong scent of rosemary can stimulate your mind and help you to focus.

Schisandra

Russians began using schisandra in the 1960s and have conducted many studies through the Swedish Herbal Institute Research & Development. Animal-based studies from 2008 suggest that schisandra may be beneficial to the brain by increasing blood flow. This herb may also protect you against neurodegenerative diseases, help reduce stress and support the central nervous system.

St. John's Wort

NCCAM suggests that St. John's wort may be beneficial in treating your anxiety, sleep disorder or mild to moderate depression. You can consume this herb as a capsule or tablet, tea or liquid extract. Europeans prescribe it to treat depression, however in the United States it is readily available over the counter. Most health food centers or pharmacies carry several varieties of the herb. St. John's wort does interact with some drugs, so discuss it with your doctor if you plan to supplement with the herb.
