Controlling dandruff may mean the difference between being confident in social settings versus embarrassing moments hiding the flakes and constant itching. Though dandruff is a chronic scalp condition, it is seldom serious. Many medicated shampoos to treat dandruff are available at the market but there are also many home remedies that soothe itching and reduce flaking.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is found in many anti-dandruff shampoos and conditioners available over the counter. Adding a little tea tree oil may reduce dandruff when used daily. Tea tree oil has antiseptic, antibiotic and anti-fungal properties that soothe the skin and scalp. You only need a few drops tea tree oil in a bottle of shampoo for it to be effective. Some people may have an allergic reaction to tea tree oil so be sure to look for excessive itching, redness and rash after use. Stop using if an allergic reaction presents itself.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is used for many alternative medicine remedies including dandruff. There are different methods prescribed for using vinegar to treat dandruff but most suggest leaving the vinegar to soak on the scalp for a duration of time, anywhere from a few minutes to overnight. It is thought that the potassium in vinegar reduces the itchy scalp and flaking. After allowing your scalp to absorb the vinegar, wash your hair thoroughly with cool water and a gentle shampoo.
Heathly Lifestyle Considerations
Dandruff is sometimes caused by dry skin. You may be able to reduce dandruff symptoms by lowering your stress levels and maintaining a healthy diet with enough zinc, B vitamins and fatty acids. Shampooing often with a gentle shampoo followed by a conditioner moisturizes the scalp. Styling products like mousse and gel buildup can increase dandruff. Using less product in your hair can help.
