The Cambridge Diet, called the Cambridge Weight Plan in the United Kingdom, involves drinking three servings of the company's signature formula shakes every day or another of their food items to replace meals or snacks. This very low-calorie diet has several different specific plans. The products are only available through distributors, and the products in the United States have a somewhat different formulation from those in the United Kingdom. The diet has some potential disadvantages.

Features

Cambridge Diet shakes are available in several flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and cappuccino. These meal replacement products provide protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Whey and soy are the protein sources. For a change of pace, you may have Cambridge Diet soups and bars instead of shakes.

Low-Calorie Issues

The Cambridge Diet offers several different plans. The most restrictive provides only 820 calories per day. Restricting food this drastically can trigger excessive eating, cautions Diets in Review. This diet is not suitable if your job or participation in athletics requires intensive physical activity. In addition, very low-calorie diets increase the risk of developing gallstones.

Medical Considerations

In the United Kingdom, the Cambridge Weight Plan must include supervision by an official counselor, according to Diet.com. In the American version, a physician-monitored program is optional. It is recommended for individuals who need to lose 30 lbs. or more, and for anyone receiving medical care for other health problems. Consult your doctor before starting the Cambridge Diet if you have high blood pressure or kidney or liver disease, as the diet may not be safe for people with those health problems. The diet is not intended for anyone under 16 years old.

Preventing Side Effects

Drinking large amounts of water during the diet is essential to prevent dehydration. Because food provides much dietary water, severely restricting food intake creates a natural water loss, according to the Cambridge Weight Plan official website. Mild to moderate dehydration can cause fatigue, headaches, muscle weakness, dizziness and lightheadedness.

Time Frame

The program does not help clients learn to eat in a healthy manner for the long term, so any weight lost is likely to be regained. The company addresses this issue by recommending people continue to replace meals and snacks with Cambridge Diet products indefinitely.
