Side Effects of Nexium & Prilosec

Prilosec is the brand name of the generic drug omeprazole. Nexium is the brand name of the drug esomeprazole. These drugs are often used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, and also to prevent and treat certain types of ulcers. These drugs work by preventing the stomach from producing too much acid. As with any drug, these medications can have side effects that range from mild to severe.

Digestive System Disturbances

The most common side effects that Prilosec and Nexium cause are digestive disturbances. These include diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, both of these medications can also cause worsening heartburn in some patients. The Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) report that both of these medications can cause constipation as well. Nexium in particular can cause an excess of belching, sour stomach or indigestion, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Allergic Reactions

Rarely, these medications can cause severe allergic reactions. According to the NIH, these symptoms include swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. If these symptoms occur, it is a medical emergency. Call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately.

Skin Disturbances

An uncommon side effect that has been reported in both Prilosec and Nexium is itching or redness. Some patients develop a rash. In severe cases, this rash can cause peeling or blistering. Both the Mayo Clinic and NIH recommend contacting your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.

Other Side Effects

Other side effects that are not common may also occur with either of these medications. These include fever, joint pain, sore throat, sores in the mouth, eye irritation, fatigue and chills. The Mayo Clinic also lists urinary disturbances such as painful urination or blood in the urine as side effects for Prilosec.
