How Luvs Diapers Are Made
Luvs diapers are disposable diapers manufactured by Procter
Manufacturing
The mill department creates cellulose fiber from pulp. The cellulose fiber is mixed with an an acrylic acid-based polymer. A tissue fiber is added to the top and bottom. This creates the absorbent core which is then compressed. These polymers hold fluid and allows the diaper to be thinner without leaking.
The diapers are made with three layers that are glued together with high speed machinery. The bottom layer is a cloth-like material. The middle layer is the absorbent core. The top layer is a cloth-like material. The bottom and middle layers of diaper material travel in long strips on a conveyor belt through machinery that laminates the layers together. The top sheet is fed into the machine and put in place on top of the other two layers before the laminating process. The three layers are laminated together through a combination of gluing, heat and welding. Then they are cut to the desired shape and Velcro is attached to the diapers.
During the cutting processes, waste occurs. This waste is bagged and saved to be used in other products, such as the inside of funeral caskets. Luvs diapers are also made with elastic leg gathers, elastic waistbands, shields at the waist to prevent leakage over the top of the diaper. Once they are complete, the diapers are folded and packaged.
Physical Characteristics
According to Luvs, the company manufactures diapers with improved technology allowing them "to be thinner, lighter and super absorbent." Luvs lightly scents and treats the diapers with aloe. The lining is soft and the sides are flexible helping to prevent skin irritations. Luvs diapers are decorated with popular cartoon designs so they look cute and toddlers enjoy wearing them.
