Oily skin and acne are often thought of as a young person's problem, but the American Academy of Dermatology notes that it can persist well in your thirties, forties and fifties, and is known as persistent acne. If your oily skin is causing redness, shininess and acne even into your forties and fifties, you need to combat the excess oil with sufficient moisture and the right products. Choosing the right type of makeup can help to keep your skin shine-free, with oil slicks kept under control.
Step 1
Wash your makeup off each night with a mild cleanser, washing no more than once or twice a day. Harsh cleanser may seem to make your face feel less oily, but they can upset the natural balance of moisturize your face. Instead, look for gentle cleansers, like soaps containing moisturizers like vitamin E and shea butter.
Step 2
Use a moisturizer that contains sunscreen. Even if your face is oily, you still need to ensure that it stays hydrated to limit the over-production of oil to compensate for dryness. Adding a sunscreen will help protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. Make sure to apply your moisturizer with sunscreen daily, even during the winter, as the sun's harsh rays can damage all year round.
Step 3
Purchase skin care products based upon your skin type, not your age. While skin care companies cater to the over 40 and 50 crowd with anti-wrinkle creams and other products targeted to older women and men, if you have oily skin you need to purchase skin care products targeted toward oily skin instead, notes "Grand Times" magazine. Look for terms like "non-comedogenic" and "oil-free" on packaging.
Step 4
Smooth on a makeup primer before you apply makeup, foundation and powder. Oily skin can deteriorate makeup and make it slide off of your skin and even become caked in fine lines and wrinkles. A primer fills pores and gives your makeup a matte surface to sit on for longer wearing makeup and less obvious wear.
Step 5
Carry blotter papers with you in your purse or briefcase. While you may have used powder as a way to tame oil and shininess when you were younger, applying more makeup can make you look older, makeup artist Paul Starr warns "Glamour" magazine. Instead, using blotting papers to sop up excess oil can leave your skin looking shine-free and healthy without piling on more makeup.
Step 6
Schedule a yearly appointment with your dermatologist. As you age, you become more susceptible to skin cancers and other skin conditions, so it's important to have a yearly skin checkup. You can also talk to your dermatologist about ways to tame your oily skin for a fresher looking, more youthful face.
