Most people have dark circles under their eyes at some point or another. In most cases, these annoying circles are a temporary and harmless cosmetic condition that can be reversed with some modifications to your habits and environment. Sometimes, however, these circles are due to immutable factors such as genetics or age and therefore cannot be entirely eliminated.

Use Concealer

If you need to hide your dark circles quickly, using a good concealer is your best bet. Under-eye concealer is made of a dense product specifically intended to cover dark shadows. The website Eye Make Up Tips recommends selecting a concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone if your circles are recessed, but a concealer one shade darker if your circles are puffy.

Modify Your Sleep Habits

Dark circles may be due to your sleep habits. When you are sleep deprived, the skin under your eyes can appear paler and thinner than normal, making the network of blood vessels in this area become more obvious. As the blood vessels become more apparent, they show up as dark circles under your eyes. To avoid sleep-related dark circles, Natural Eye Care recommends getting a minimum of eight hours of sleep per night.

Apply Cold Compresses

Applying cold compresses to your eyes can decrease vessel swelling and diminish the appearance of dark circles. A variety of natural products can be used as cold compresses: from spoons stuck in the freezer for several minutes to grated potatoes that have been refrigerated. The Natural Eye Care website recommends using cold compresses soak in rosemary tea. To make the tea, boil a half-cup of fresh rosemary in a quart of water. Let the tea steep for 20 minutes, then strain and place in the refrigerator until cold. Afterward, soak a washcloth in the tea, wring it, and place the cloth over your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes.

Make lifestyle changes

Smoking and drinking too much alcohol can contribute to having dark circles. Smoking damages collagen, the fibrous protein the supports the skin, thus causing the skin to grow thin and dark circles to become more evident. Likewise, alcoholic drinks can dehydrate and thin skin, making the blood vessels under the eye stand out more prominently. If you believe smoking and drinking alcohol might be a factor in your under eye circles, quit smoking and limit your alcohol intake and see whether there is any improvement.
