Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical impulses in the brain. According to the Merck Manuals Online Medical Library, they affect two percent of adults at some point in their life. Seizure disorder is an umbrella term used to describe a number of different types of seizures, including epilepsy, non-epileptic seizures, symptomatic seizures and psychogenic seizures. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, UMMC, website, a number of treatments are available to control seizures, including anticonvulsants and sedatives. Some herbs may also help to reduce seizure frequency and severity. However, they should never be relied on to treat a seizure disorder, as there is no scientific evidence to show they are effective.
Kava
According to the UMMC, kava is an herb that has been traditionally used as a sedative for seizure disorders, although it is primarily used as an anxiety treatment. Kava is a member of the pepper family and grows on the islands of the South Pacific. The underground stems and roots are used to make tablets, beverages and topical solutions, notes the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, NCCAM. Kava should only be used under the direction of a medical professional as it may cause liver failure. Consult your doctor before using kava to treat a seizure disorder.
Valerian
Valerian has anticonvulsant properties and also acts a sedative, notes the UMMC website. Although traditionally used to treat sleep disorders, valerian is sometimes used to treat epilepsy. However, MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. Library of Medicine notes that there is insufficient evidence to show that it is effective. MedlinePlus states that short-term use of Valerian is usually safe but its long-term safety is unknown. Valerian may cause side effects, including headache, insomnia and drowsiness. Do not take Valerian if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid valerian if you are due to undergo surgery as it may slow down the nervous system. Do not take valerian without consulting your physician.
Chamomile
Chamomile is a sedating herb that may help to soothe the central nervous system. According to NCCAM, there are two forms of chamomile used to treat medical conditions: German chamomile and Roman chamomile. The German form is most commonly used in the United States. Chamomile is usually taken as a tea but can also be taken as a tablet or in capsules. NCCAM warns that chamomile may cause an allergic reaction, including skin rashes, shortness of breath and even anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. You should not use any herb before discussing it with your health-care provider.
