The U.S. Air Force fitness test is set up to test body composition, strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness of its members. The test is divided into four categories: sit-ups, push-ups, waist circumference, and 1.5-mile run. While a score of 100 is attainable, you only need to score a 75 to pass. Members of the USAF must pass the test unless medically exempt.
Male Fitness Standards
The male fitness standards are divided into age ranges of 5-year increments up to age 55. For a male age 25 to 29 to score a perfect 100, he must run 1.5 miles in less than 9:36. His abdominal circumference must be less than 32.5 inches. He must perform more than 62 push-ups in 1 minute and must perform more than 55 sit-ups in 1 minute.
On the opposite end of the age range, for a 55-year-old male to score a perfect 100, he must run 1.5 miles in less than 11:06. He must have an abdominal circumference of less than 32.5 inches. He must perform more than 39 push-ups in 1 minute and must perform 43 sit-ups in 1 minute.
Female Fitnes Standards
The female fitness standards are also divided into age ranges of 5-year increments up to age 55. For a female age 25 to 29 to score a perfect 100, she must run 1.5 miles in 11:25-11:36. Her abdominal circumference must be less than 29.5 inches. She must perform more than 40 push-ups in 1 minute and must perform more than 46 sit-ups in 1 minute.
On the opposite end of the age range, for a 55-year-old female to score a perfect 100, she must run 1.5 miles in less than 14:24. She must have an abdominal circumference of less than 29.5 inches. She must perform more than 14 push-ups in 1 minute and must perform 27 sit-ups in 1 minute.
Standards for Measuring
The U.S. Air Force has a standard for measuring the abdominal circumference as to be consistent with the results. To measure, find the top of your hip bone and the top of your iliac crest. Extend the tape measure horizontally around your abdomen at this point. Before you mark your position on the tape, make sure that the tape is snug around your waist but is not pressed into your skin.
Fitness Score Chart
The U.S. Air Force defines the results of the fitness test in a fitness score chart. Excellent is any score greater than 90. Good is from 75 to 89.99. Marginal is 70 to 74.9. Poor is any score less than 70.
Training
While some of these requirements seem strenuous, there are many training programs available to prepare you for the test. Reference additional resources for more information.
