Collagen and elastin begin to breakdown as you age. The American Academy of Dermatology states that your skin begins to lose its firmness and spring as early as age 40. Certain creams can help prevent and diminish wrinkles. Some of these creams are sold over-the-counter, while others may require a prescription from your doctor.

Retinol Creams

Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, works as an antioxidant, which destroys free radicals, according to MayoClinic.com. MayoClinic.com also reports that retinol was the first ingredient to be widely used in over-the-counter anti-aging creams. Free radicals, such as sun damage, cigarette smoke and other toxins, cause your skin to break down, which leads to wrinkles. Retinol works against these destructive properties to preserve your skin. Ordinary retinol creams are sold in retail stores and pharmacies. Stronger formulas of retinol, such as tretinoin, require a prescription due to the potency of the cream.

Hydroxy Acids

Three variations of hydroxy acids include alpha hydroxy, beta hydroxy and poly hydroxy. These acids are derived from sugar-containing fruits and work as an exfoliant. They remove the superficial layer of old, dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new and smoother skin. This helps the old, damaged wrinkled skin be replaced with new, smoother skin, aiding in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Hydroxy acids can cause photosensitivity. Avoid sun exposure when possible while wearing these creams. MayoClinic.com advises wearing sunscreen for at least one week after discontinuation of hydroxy creams to avoid sun damage to your skin.

Copper Peptides

Copper peptides benefit the skin in multiple ways. They work by stimulating collagen production and enhance the effects of antioxidants, according to MayoClinic.com. Collagen is imperative to firmer, younger looking skin. Collagen helps your stretch, bounce back and stay firm. By increasing the actions of antioxidants, this only further enhances your skin's youthful appearance. Copper peptides are found in every cell; when combined with an anti-aging cream, they work together with small protein fragments. Protein is also important for your skin, as your skin primarily consists of a special type of protein --- keratin. Copper peptides can also magnify wound healing, which can help reduce the appearance of scars due to adult acne, surgery or facial trauma.
