Grinding whole flax seed creates flax seed meal. You can make your own at home in a coffee or spice grinder, or buy already-ground meal at most health food stores.

Calories

A tablespoon of ground flax seeds contains 37 calories. This serving size also contains 3 g of fat, 2 g of fiber and 1.28 g of protein.

Benefits

Flax contains a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lower your levels of "bad" cholesterol, notes Dr. William Sears on his website. Flax's omega-3s and antioxidants can also boost the health of your immune system, help with infant brain development, lower your risk of certain cancers and improve colon health. You must grind flaxseed to benefit from its nutrition.

Uses

Flaxseed meal may be added to bread dough or other baked goods. Sprinkle ground flax over cereal or oatmeal in the morning or whip it into a fruit smoothie.
