Foods With Collagen Protein

Collagen is a type of fibrous insoluble protein. Its main function in the body is to promote the health and strength of tendons, ligaments, bones and cartilage. It is also vital for keeping the skin elastic and supple. Foods don't actually contain collagen, but there are several that help promote its formation in the body.

Soy

Soy products are created from soy beans, which are legumes. This means they have seeds with a pod covering them. Genistein is a substance found in soy that gives it collagen-producing capabilities. Soy milk, soy cheese, soy beans and any other soy-containing product can help boost collagen.

Beans

Beans are other types of legumes that are high in fiber, protein, iron, and they can also boost collagen. In this case, it is due to a substance called hyaluronic acid. Examples of these include lentils, pinto beans, broad beans, butter beans and peanuts.

Vegetables and Fruits

Dark green vegetables are high in water content, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and they also contain lutein and vitamin C, which can promote collagen production in the body. Examples of these vegetables are asparagus, collards, kale, spinach and cabbage. Citrus fruits that contain vitamin C can also help promote collagen. These include grapefruits, oranges, kiwis, strawberries and lemons.

Berries

Berries contain substances called anthocyanidins. These substances can help strengthen the connective tissue matrix by linking the collagen fibers together. Examples of berries that contain anthocyanidins include raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and cherries.

Avocados

Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat, fiber, potassium, and they are alkaline. They also have plant sterols, which can help promote collagen production. You can use avocados or use avocado oil in order to get such benefits.

Honey

Manuka honey is a specific type that comes from New Zealand. Not only can this be consumed as a food, but it can also be applied to the skin to promote collagen protein production.

Sulphur

Sulphur is a mineral that helps with protein synthesis, cellular respiration, and it also helps form collagen. You can find this mineral in foods like fish, poultry, celery, black olives and cucumbers.

Proline

Eggs are high in protein, cholesterol, fat, amino acids, and they also contain a substance called proline that can help with collagen production. Wheat germ and wheat germ oil are other foods that are high in proline.
