Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral condition that has symptoms of restlessness, poor concentration and and overall hyperactivity. It can be diagnosed in children and adults. Children may not be able to focus in the classroom, become bored easily and have temper tantrums. This chronic condition continues into adulthood. People with ADHD adapt with coping mechanisms. In addition, supplements, exercise and medications are used to calm the symptoms.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort is a common supplement used to treat ADHD, according to Diana Ketchen writing for ArtilcesBase.com. St. John's wort may not work for everyone. When the extract is used, this supplement decreases anxiety and has a calming effect. It is believed that a chemical in St. John's wort called hypericin helps regulate mood disorders, according to Medline Plus. St. John's wort should only be used as short-term therapy.

It is found that children and adults that have ADHD are also deficient in magnesium, according to Billie J. Sahley, Ph.D., CNC, writing for Intelegen.com. Chamomile tea contains the needed magnesium. When the the body is stressed mentally or physically, this mineral is used up. Proper levels of magnesium in the body help combat stress, according to StreetDirectory.com. In children, 200 milligrams should be taken. Adults should have 300 to 400 milligrams. Many food groups also contain magnesium, such as fish, vegetables and grains.

Herbal Calcium

Calcium is another dietary mineral that can affect or aggravate symptoms of ADHD when depleted. It is important for building strong, dense bones, supporting brain function and muscle contraction. Some of the first signs of calcium deficiency are irritability and sore muscles and joints. This can contribute to acting out and the inability to focus. Calcium is easily replaced through intake of herbs, proper foods and supplements. Herbal varieties include horsetail grass, nettle leaves and oatstraw herb. These herbs are provided in vegetable-based capsules and found in vitamin stores. Children should consume 1000 milligrams a day. Adolescents and adults should consume 1200 to 1500 milligrams, according to Intelegen.com. Food sources of calcium include milk and cheeses. Calcium supplements can be purchased over the counter in any pharmacy.
