If you're following a no-carb diet, you may find your food choices a bit limiting, since all fruits, vegetables, grain products, nuts, beans, seeds and many dairy products are off-limits. However, there are plenty of menus you can enjoy that include no carbs -- you just need to escape a traditional food pyramid-based meal mindset to identify them.

Significance

It's difficult to avoid carbohydrates completely in a modern diet, but it's possible to thrive on such a diet -- the Eskimos who live a traditional lifestyle in the far north have menus that feature nothing but meat in the form of whale and seal during the winter months, and very few carbs even in the summer months, according to the August 2002 edition of "Discover" magazine.

Types

However, you might find it difficult to get whale and seal meat for your menu, so you'll need to look for other inspiration. Fortunately, there are plenty of foods devoid of carbohydrate, including most forms of meat and some dairy products, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Mix these foods up by preparing them differently, and you'll have varying menu plans to last weeks.

Options

For breakfast, you can start with smoked salmon with poached eggs, or try fried eggs with a side of bacon - just make sure that the bacon and the smoked salmon don't include added sugar. If the manufacturer added sugar, it will appear on the label in the ingredients list. You also can enjoy a breakfast featuring fish sauteed in butter or olive oil with salt and pepper, and add some fresh herbs such as dill weed for seasoning.

More Options

Lunch might include sliced pork that's been roasted with basil and olive oil, along with deviled eggs made with spices and mayonnaise. For dinner, meanwhile, you can broil a steak or a chicken, and enjoy that with bacon or sausage along with a boiled egg. And, you may be surprised to learn that distilled gin, vodka and whiskey include no carbohydrates, so you can drink those as well.

Cautions

Although it's possible to eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet, it's not exactly advisable, according to Vanderbilt University. When you cut back severely on carbohydrates, you'll probably experience symptoms that can include fatigue, headaches and muscle aches. In addition, the long-term effects of eating a no-carb menu plan just aren't known, and you potentially could become deficient in several important vitamins. Definitely check with your doctor before embarking on such a program.
