If you prefer the practicality and ease of a short hairstyle, but occasionally want the luxury of long hair, clip-in extensions may be the right accessory for you. You can have long hair when you want it, and return to your short style the rest of the time. Clip-in hair extensions work well for special occasions, or when you simply want to change your look. Hair extensions have gone from a salon experience to a do-it-yourself beauty treatment.
Step 1
Shampoo your hair, making sure you remove all buildup from any styling products. Condition your hair after you have shampooed.
Step 2
Towel or blow dry your hair. If you are blow drying, use a dryer that has a comb attachment so you dry it thoroughly, from root to tip.
Step 3
Starting 3 inches up from the nape of your neck, divide your hair horizontally, using a tailed comb. Comb down the bottom portion and place a clip in the top part of the hair to keep it up and out of the way.
Step 4
Measure the extensions that you want. Place the extension at the back of your hair and cut the extension into two pieces, removing the the extra, leaving only the weft that conforms to your head shape.
Step 5
Using a needle and thread, sew the clips onto the weft approximately 3 inches apart. Make sure the clips are sewed in securely and the rubber side of the weft is touching the hair of the extension.
Step 6
Gently clip the extensions into your own hair. Brush your hair to make sure the extensions are securely fastened. This will also blend your hair with the extensions, giving it a more natural look.
Tips and Warnings
- Make sure the color of your extensions match your own hair, or it will look unnatural.
- If your hair is too short, your extensions will not stay in long. Hair should be at least 4 inches long for the best results.
