Why Colon Cleanse?
Cleansing the colon is a form of detoxification. Humans live in a polluted world where they are exposed to toxins from pesticides, insecticides, car exhaust and manufacturing waste. All of their bodies' internal organs must filter out these toxins.
Every detoxification program begins with cleansing the colon as it is the second largest internal organ to do this function (the skin is our largest organ). By removing waste from the large intestine, it becomes safe to continue a body-wide cleanse. The idea is to be certain the toxins are released rather than kept circulating in the bloodstream.
Benefits
Ideally, if a person has two to three bowel movements daily, he is not toxic--he is clearly moving toxins and waste efficiently away from the body. Many people report having only two or three bowel movements per week. They experience chronic constipation.
Using colon cleansing treatments, such as colonics, where water is placed into the colon and waste is released, or using enemas at home, can relieve irregularity. Long-term, having at least one bowel movement daily can improve digestion, assimilation of food and elimination to prevent chronic constipation. People sometimes undergo colon cleansing treatments as a way to jumpstart a weight-loss diet.
Process
Whether at a hospital or clinic, a licensed vocational nurse or licensed hydrocolon therapist would administer a colonic. A single colonic might cost from $75 to $110 or more per one-hour treatment. Filtered water would be used to prevent introducing any water-borne parasites into the body, such as giardia.
At home, six to seven rounds of an enema is roughly equivalent to one professional colonic. Both are designed to remove waste from the bowel. It is important to eat yogurt with live cultures, such as acidophilius lactobacillus, to recolonize the friendly flora in the intestines. This will improve digestion and prevent candida or yeast infections.
