Razor bumps, medically known as pseudofolliculitis barbae, result when your hair becomes ingrown after shaving. According to DermNet NZ, your hair can get trapped under your skin and result in inflamed bumps that may be itchy and painful. But you can take steps to help minimize your chances of developing razor burn. Use proper shaving techniques and skin care methods to soothe your skin and stop ingrown hairs from forming.

Exfoliate Daily

Exfoliation is an important part of skin care, particularly if you experience ingrown hairs. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, rubbing your wet skin with a washcloth can help get rid of the buildup of dead cells that can clog your follicles and make you more likely to develop razor bumps. This will also help free any hairs that would otherwise become trapped beneath your skin. Wash your body nightly with a gentle soap, then rub a washcloth over the area where you experience razor burn. Do this right before hair removal as well, but do not rub too harshly, as this can exacerbate irritation.

Shave Properly

Proper shaving techniques can cut down on irritation and help keep ingrown hairs at bay, says DermNet NZ. Wet your skin, smooth on a moisturizing shaving cream, and allow it to soak for about five minutes. This will soften your hair and skin and make shaving more smoothly. Shave in the direction your hair grows instead of against it, and do not stretch or tug on your skin, which can lead to irritation. Rinse the remaining shaving cream away with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel. Shave every other day or less to reduce your chances of getting razor bumps.

Apply Salicylic Acid

Using a chemical exfoliant like salicylic acid can get rid of ingrown hairs and prevent new ones from cropping up. "Allure" magazine suggests applying a 2 percent salicylic acid acne cream to the area where you have removed hair to lessen any redness and swelling. Smooth on a thin layer of the cream right after hair removal, and continue to apply it to clean skin once a day for a week thereafter. DermNet NZ states that this will get rid of dead skin and bacteria and keep your pores clear of the debris that can clog them and potentially lead to ingrown hairs. If your skin begins to flake or peel, reduce your application to every other day.
