How to Get Started Running on a Treadmill

Staying fit does not have to be difficult. Exercising with a treadmill machine can effectively help you reach your fitness goals. Treadmill running is simpler than outdoor running. It is also convenient and a great alternative if you can't run outside due to bad weather or if you are concerned about safety or have an injury. While it may feel a little odd at first, you will get used to walking and running on a treadmill quickly.

Step 1

Familiarize yourself with your treadmill. Make sure you know what all the buttons on the control panel are for before using it.

Step 2

Adjust the settings on the control panel that will allow you to do a warm-up walk. You need to start out by walking so you can get accustomed to the feeling of your feet being dragged under you on the belt. Keep walking for 10 minutes, until you start to feel comfortable, then you can increase the speed and start to run.

Step 3

Avoid holding onto the handrails once you begin running. Initially, you might want the assurance of grabbing the handrails for stability. Although, doing this won't allow you to achieve a good walking posture or stride. It will also prevent you from moving naturally with arm motions. Instead try to keep your arms near your hips and let them move opposite to each leg. This will help you go faster.

Step 4

Avoid looking down at your feet or other people running on a treadmill, which may make you feel light-headed. Instead focus on the control panel until you feel comfortable looking upwards. Once you're feeling comfortable with your method, start to look up for a couple of seconds then back down again. Eventually you will be able to complete your entire treadmill exercises without looking ahead, either looking in the mirror or watching television.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always wear comfortable clothing when doing treadmill exercises.
  • Consult your physician before starting treadmill exercises.
