BMI, or body mass index, is a simple ratio that can determine a child's healthy weight. It is important to note that BMI is not an indication of health. While the calculations are the same, BMI in children is much different than in adults, as the composition of a child's body changes dramatically with age. If your child should fall into a BMI range other than "healthy weight," visit your pediatrician for further information.
Step 1
Weigh and record the child's weight, in pounds.
Step 2
Measure and record the child's height, in inches.
Step 3
Calculate and record the child's BMI measurement using the following formula: BMI = (weight in pounds * 703) / (height in inches x height in inches)
Step 4
Find the child's BMI percentile on the appropriate BMI chart (see Resources).
Tips and Warnings
- To get as accurate weight as possible, weigh the child while only wearing undergarments. There are several different BMI charts available. Make sure you use one for children (adult charts are different) and that the chart is sex-specific (male and female charts vary greatly).
- Calculating the child's BMI is a rough estimate of normal weight for a child's height. It is not a measure of overall health and is not intended to take the place of a pediatrician's consultation.
