What are Good High Calorie Foods for People With Cancer?

The daily energy needs for people with cancer may increase due to the effects of the cancer itself or because of the side effects that result from cancer treatments. The National Institutes of Health explains that cancer itself can result in an increased metabolism and can also result in an increased breakdown of muscle and fat stores. The National Cancer Institutes warns that other factors may result in eating problems such as poor appetite, bowel problems like constipation and diarrhea, swallowing problems, mouth sores, food intolerances, nausea, vomiting and depression.

Nuts, Seeds and Nut Butters

Nuts, seeds and nut butters are a great source of calories, protein and healthy fats. Nuts and seeds can be added to salads, cottage cheese, yogurt and cereal. Nut butters can be spread on crackers, bread and tortillas or stirred into cereals, yogurt and cottage cheese.

Dairy

Full fat dairy products, such as milk, cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese provide a significant amount of calories, protein and fat. If dairy is not tolerated, try soy milk, rice milk or almond milk.

Meat and Fish

Meat and fish are great sources of calories and protein. Ground beef can easily be added to just about any meal such as pasta dishes, casseroles, tacos, burritos and stews. Fish provides the body with essential fatty acids, also know as Omega-3 fatty acids. Tuna mixed with mayonnaise and spread on crackers or bread provides a high calorie snack.

Eggs

Eggs are a great source of calories and protein. Hard boiled eggs are a convenient snack to keep in the refrigerator. Eggs can be added to many dishes such as oatmeal, mashed potatoes and meatloaf in order to increase calories and protein.

Fats

Oils provide a significant amount of calories and healthy fats. A great high calorie snack is bread dipped into olive oil. Olive oil can be added to certain dishes like pasta, soups and casseroles. Canola oil is a good oil to use for cooking and baking and adds a significant amount of calories. Butter can also be added to food in order to increase calories.
