The Calories in Fagioli Soup

Pasta e fagioli, which literally means "pasta and beans," is a rich and hearty traditional Italian soup. Also called pasta fagioli or pasta fazool, this dish makes a low-calorie meal that's high in nutrients.

Ingredients

Typically, pasta fagioli is made with white beans, small pasta, carrots, onions, garlic, celery, rosemary and broth. It is flavored with pancetta, prociutto or sausage. O Chef notes that, in spite of its status as a classic, there is no standard way to make pasta fagioli, and a range of different beans, pastas and vegetables may be used.

Calorie Content

Pasta Fagioli made with eight slices of bacon, three onions, three cloves garlic, 2 qts. chicken broth, 2 lbs. chickpeas, 14 and 1/2 oz. tomatoes, four carrots, three celery stalks and 1 cup pasta yields eight servings and contains approximately 370 calories, including 70 fat calories, according to FineCooking.com.

Lower-Calorie Alternatives

According to the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory, skipping the bacon will cut 42 calories from each serving. Cutting the pasta and bean amounts and substituting them for vegetables like zucchini, summer squash and spinach will also reduce the soup's calorie content and will add a wider variety of vitamins and minerals.
