Sockeye salmon is a large, coldwater fish found off the north Pacific Coast of the United States and commonly caught for its delicious meat. A good source of calories from proteins, sockeye salmon also contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Calories

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a 3-oz. serving of sockeye salmon contains 121 calories. Proteins make up 72 calories, while fats deliver 45 calories. Carbohydrates contribute no calories.

Components

The USDA also indicates that a 3-oz. serving of sockeye salmon weighs around 85 g. Of that amount, 18 g are proteins and 5 g are fats. Water, indigestible matter and nutrients make up the remainder.

Nutrients

A serving of sockeye salmon also provides several dietary minerals, including selenium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Several vitamins, including vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin, are also available within the serving.

Considerations

According to MayoClinic.com, eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids may lower the risk of heart disease and reduce blood cholesterol levels. The Colorado State University Extension indicates that sockeye salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids with 1,046 mg per 3-oz. serving.
