How to Prevent Premature Ejeculation
Overview
While most men occasionally ejaculate sooner than they or their partner would like during sex, when the experience happens frequently, the man may have a condition called premature ejaculation. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic estimate that close to one in three men suffers from the problem. It is a common issue caused by both psychological and physical factors that many men are too embarrassed to talk about. There is treatment, however, and, with a few tips, you can learn how to prevent premature ejaculation.
Step 1
Take time to masturbate about an hour before you have sex. Mayo Clinic doctors report that the second ejaculation can be delayed if you've already had the previous experience.
Step 2
Spend more time on other sexual behaviors such as foreplay, oral sex and touching. Take the pressure off of having to perform during intercourse by finding other ways to pleasure and be pleasured.
Step 3
Try the squeeze technique just before you are ready to ejaculate. Engage in sex as usual, then just before you ejaculate, squeeze the head of the penis where it meets the shaft. You or your partner holds the squeeze for a couple of seconds until the urge passes, then resume sexual relations after about another 30 seconds. Repeat as needed.
Step 4
Take a low-dosage antidepressant that you can get from your physician. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic report that taking a drug, such as Paxil or Prozac, a couple of hours before you engage in sex can prevent premature ejaculation.
Step 5
Rub a topical anesthetic cream on the end of your penis before sex. Much of the lotion will rub off during sex, but enough should remain to slow down your reaction time. Creams containing lidocaine or prilocaine also can desensitize your partner, however, so you should discuss the treatment before you try it.
Step 6
Enter therapy either alone or with your partner to try to uncover psychological issues that may be standing in the way of fulfilling sexual relations. Talk therapy can improve your relationship while working on the physical and emotional ramifications of your condition. Therapy aimed at reducing performance anxiety also includes learning better ways to deal with stress and problem solving that may be interfering with your sexual performance.
