Cracked heels are a nuisance that might keep you from wearing flip flops or open sandals. If not treated, they may become painful and get infected with fungus. Cracked heels are a common problem, as many people ignore the health of their feet. Several lotions and creams are helpful in treating cracked heels, and some home remedies are also quite effective.
Causes
The cause of cracked heels is dry feet and calluses. If you do not moisturize your feet, they will become dry, resulting in cracked heels. This can get worse if you walk barefoot most of the time and expose your feet to the bacteria and fungus that can grow in heel cracks.
Symptoms
Cracked heels is not a disease, it is just a condition that can be easily treated. If you notice cracks in the heels of your feet, it could be the beginning of a worse problem. If left untreated, these cracks deepen over time and may also start bleeding.
Treatment
Over-the-counter cracked heel lotions and creams can help in treating this problem. If the cracks are quite deep, it could take at least a month for the lotion to work. You can increase the effectiveness of these lotions by soaking your feet in warm water and scrubbing your heels with a pumice stone for five to 10 minutes. After drying your feet, you can apply the lotion or cream. Avoid walking for an hour or so after applying the treatment.
Natural Remedies
Natural remedies include soaking your feet in warm water before bedtime. Dry your feet completely and apply petroleum jelly or shortening to the affected area. Wear thick socks and sleep. Repeat this process every day for a week or two. Another remedy is to moisturize your feet daily, either with almond oil or a foot lotion to keep them soft.
Precautions
Cracked heels can also be the result from a diet lacking in omega 3 fatty acids and zinc. Increasing the intake of fresh fruits and nutritious meals will also help in treating cracked heels. If your heel looks infected, you should consult with your doctor who may prescribe an antibiotic for the infection.
