Lipitor is a medicine used to reduce triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the blood stream. It is part of a group of medications that inhibit the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase. The use of Lipitor may help to prevent such ailments as strokes, heart attacks and chest pain. The 80 milligram (mg) Lipitor is available as a pill.
Common Temporary Side Effects
Lipitor 80 mg pills, also known by their generic name atorvastatin, may cause some side effects that fade or vanish after your body gets used to the medication. These types of side effects aren't necessarily serious but may be if they continue. In that case, consult your doctor. Some of these side effects include nasal congestion, headaches, pain when urinating or difficulty urinating, pain near the cheekbones or eyes, side or back pain and hoarseness.
Uncommon Temporary Side Effects
There are other side effects that also may fade with use of Lipitor. These may include vomiting and nausea, insomnia, stomach pain, constipation, sweats, belching, gas, indigestion, weakness, loss of appetite or an overall feeling of illness or discomfort. Rare temporary side effects may include euphoria or dysphoria, pain in the groin, nosebleeds, blurry vision, impotence, depression, paranoia, skin yellowing, facial stiffness, light sensitivity in the eyes, lowered libido, breast lumps and nightmares, among others.
Serious Side Effects
Lipitor may cause some serious side effects that require a doctor's attention. If you experience any of these types of side effects, contact your doctor for advice and possible treatment, if necessary. These side effects may include chills, diarrhea, a cough, dizziness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling in the face particularly of the lips, tongue or eyelids, a rash, wheezing, skin blistering or peeling, fever, ulcers or sores on the mouth, eye irritations, itching, muscle spasms, urinary tract infection and pain in the joints, among others.
