Food Treatments for Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis, and The American Academy of Family Physicians explains that the joint most often affected by gout is the big toe, but severe joint pain can also occur in wrists, ankles and knees. Gout is the result of a buildup of uric acid that crystallizes when it accumulates around the joints, Medications can be used to manage gout, but diet can also play a role. People who have gout should limit their intake of organ meats, seafood and alcohol because they are high in purines, a substance that breaks down to form uric acid. Including certain foods in a healthy diet may be able to relieve gout symptoms in some people.

Water

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, water is extremely important to treating gout. Water and other sugar-free, non-alcoholic drinks dilutes the uric acid levels in the body. Water also promotes urination, which is the way uric acid is removed from the body. People who suffer from gout attacks should increase the amount of fluids they drink daily in an effort to flush out the concentration of uric acid.

Cherries

Cherries and other fruits with dark red or purple skin, such as black grapes and blueberries, may have a beneficial effect on gout. The Mayo Clinic has studied the link between cherries and uric acid levels and reports that people who eat significant amounts of the fruit may have lower concentrations of the substance in their joints. Cherries and cherry juice may be able to relieve some of the arthritic symptoms in some people.

Coffee

The Mayo Cinic reports that the reasons are not quite clear, but a daily cup of joe may help relieve gout. Coffee has been linked to lower uric acid levels and may cause a drop in symptoms in some people. Caffeine does not seem to play a role, as both regular and decaf coffee provided the same results.

Citrus Fruit

Vitamin C in moderate amounts can lower uric acid levels and reduce the risk of gout attacks, according to the Mayo Clinic. Citrus fruits that are high in vitamin C, including oranges, can be a natural way to control the disease.
