Potassium is one of the key mineral nutrients for the body, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Potassium is responsible for maintaining normal bodily functions at the cellular level, making it essential to have sufficient amounts in the body. Some dietary choices can make it difficult to maintain sufficient potassium in the body, since these foods cause potassium loss.

Dandelions

Eaten as collard greens or made into an infusion for kidney health, dandelions can contribute to potassium loss from the body. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the leaves of the dandelion have a diuretic effect on the body. MayoClinic.com says that diuretics can lower potassium levels by promoting frequent urination. As a result, those using dandelions as a side dish or health supplement will want to simultaneously monitor their potassium levels to ensure they are not suffering from potassium loss.

Alcoholic Beverages

According to the Linus Pauling Institute, the consumption of alcoholic beverages can lower potassium levels. Individuals suffering from alcoholism may also suffer from acute potassium deficiency, known as hypokalemia. This can be caused by alcohol's diuretic effects on the body, also leading to lowered potassium levels. To drink alcohol without compromising your health, MayoClinic.com recommends drinking at no more than a moderate level. A moderate level is defined as less than three drinks per occasion or seven drinks a week for healthy women, and four drinks per occasion or 14 drinks per week for men age 65 or younger. Men over the age of 65 should lower their drinking levels to those of healthy women.

Black Licorice

Black licorice is known to lower potassium levels. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, black licorice contains a special hormone, glycyrrhizic acid, that mimics the body's natural signaling hormone for potassium excretion through urine. Doubling up on the effects of this hormone by consuming black licorice ensures that the body will lower its potassium level. To counteract the effect of black licorice on potassium level, eat it sparingly or combine eating black licorice with eating raisins, bananas or baked potatoes, which the Linus Pauling Institute says are sources of potassium.
