Graham crackers had a humble beginning as a simple graham biscuit or wafer in the early 1870s. These wafers had little nutritional value and even less taste. According to the "Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America," graham crackers got their name from the Rev. Sylvester Graham, an advocate of wholesome nutrition and baking with "graham" flour, which is un-sifted whole-wheat flour containing the bran of the wheat kernel. Today, Honey Maid Graham Crackers, a product of Nabisco and Kraft Foods, contain honey, molasses and 5 g of whole grains per serving.
