As of 2010, Washington produces 42 percent of the apples grown in the United States. The most popular varieties are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala and Cameo. The nutrition per calorie in an apple makes it a good choice.

Calorie Content

A medium apple with skin, about 3 inches in diameter, contains approximately 95 calories, minus the core and other inedible portions. If you take away the peel and slice an apple into bite-size pieces, 1 cup contains about 53 calories, according to the CalorieKing website.

Other Nutritional Values

An apple approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter provides 21 g of carbohydrates, 10 mg of calcium and 159 mg of potassium. If you keep it raw with its peel intact, a medium apple also contains 4 g of fiber, 8 mg of vitamin C, 73 IUs of vitamin A and 4 mcg of folate.

Considerations

Peeling an apple can remove about half its vitamin C, according to the University of Illinois Extension website. The peel also contains insoluble fiber, which helps food move quickly through the digestive system. Apples also contain soluble fiber, or pectin, which helps keep cholesterol from building up in arteries, a major risk factor for heart disease.
