Smooth Fitness Treadmill Buying Guide

Smooth Fitness is an exercise equipment manufacturer based out of King of Prussia in Pennsylvania. The company produces elliptical trainers, stationery bicycles and treadmills. According to the Consumer Reports website, the company's treadmills can be purchased from specialty fitness stores, and as of November 2010 range in prices from below $1,000 to upwards of $2,000.

Types

Smooth Fitness produces both folding and non-folding treadmill models. The folding models, such as the 5.65 and 6.75, cost less than the larger non-folding models, such as the 9.45TV and 9.35HR. However, the manufacturer does offer free in-room installation for the larger non-folding treadmills.

Features

Smooth Fitness treadmills include many standard features, including large running decks and quiet 2.5 or 3.0 horsepower motors. Inclines go up to 15.0, and speeds max out at 11.2 mph. Higher-end models, like the 9.45TV, include an LCD TV set, MP3 player compatibility, hydra shock absorption systems and a lifetime warranty. The more expensive models from Smooth Fitness also include the company's patented motion control technology, which allows you to adjust the speed of the treadmill by waving your hands during exercise.

Function

All treadmill models from Smooth Fitness include a heart rate monitor. Each model comes standard with a Polar wireless transmitter that you wear around your chest while working out. The built-in receiver is located in the treadmill console. Your workout can be adjusted based on the heart rate reading displayed on screen. According to Consumer Reports, a chest strap monitor is preferable over hand-grip sensors since you can continually monitor your heart rate.

Considerations

Smooth Fitness recommends you examine and try out a treadmill before buying it. The fitness equipment manufacturer created a buying guide on its website to help you purchase a quality treadmill. Recommendations include choosing a treadmill with a diagonal seam on the belt since the extra bonding makes the belt stronger. Other suggestions include treadmills with 2- to 3-inch rollers for easy adjustment, and models that include a minimum three-year warranty.

Warning

Remember to check the specifications before you buy a treadmill from Smooth Fitness. All models can be used by individuals weighing less than 300 lbs., while only select models are available, such as the 7.35 and 9.35HR, for individuals over 300 lbs.
