Healthy skin and hair are two of the most important aspects of your appearance. Although it may seem difficult, there are steps that can be taken to make your skin and hair look and feel more healthy. Follow a few rules to take care of your skin and hair for a healthier overall look.
Shampoos
All shampoos are not created equal. Depending on the strength of the ingredients, different shampoo formulations will change the way your hair feels after being washed. Select shampoos that contain lauryl sulfate or sulfosuccinate for extremely clean hair. If you have problems with flyaway hair, moisturizing shampoos will eliminate static and prevent your hair from drying out. Do not use combination shampoos that also include conditioner, as they can leave your hair feeling sticky or dry. When washing your hair, use about a nickel-size amount of shampoo, and massage it into your scalp for at least 30 seconds. According to DermNet NZ, it is better to wash your hair with cool or warm water, rather than hot water.
Hair Management
You may be damaging your hair when you style it every day. Hair damage may not be noticeable at first, but over time it may cause your hair to become brittle and dry, and possibly lead to hair loss. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends letting your hair air dry after washing. If air drying is not possible, wrap your hair in a towel to absorb excess water before blow drying. Because wet hair is more likely to break because of its elasticity, rubbing your hair dry with a towel may cause it to break and fall out. Conditioner is good for your hair. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends conditioning your hair every time you wash it. Although conditioner doesn't actually repair any hair problems, it can improve hair's appearance by decreasing static electricity and making it shiny. Conditioner also protects your hair from UV rays, preventing further damage.
Moisturizers
Moisturizer is used to treat dry skin, and there are many on the market. These creams and lotions provide a protective barrier over sensitive skin and improve the texture of your skin. Tinted moisturizers can cover up skin imperfections. The key to selecting the perfect moisturizer for you is to know what ingredients to look for. If you need a moisturizer to soften skin that has become scaly or thickened, look for the ingredients alpha hydroxy acid, glycerin and urea. These moisturizers help the skin absorb moisture and temporarily hold it there to treat excess dryness. For rough skin, moisturizers with petrolatum, mineral oil and lanolin help replace lipids, helping to lubricate and smooth the skin.
