Virgin olive oil is pure juice from the olive obtained through the use of pressure and without the use of chemicals. Extra virgin olive oil is simply high-quality virgin olive oil that has low acidity and highly rated flavor.

Calories

One tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil has 120 calories. One tbsp. has 14 g of fat, which is 22 percent of the recommended daily limit of fat, and 10 percent of the recommended daily limit of saturated fat.

Pure and Light Oils

Olive oils marketed in the United States as pure or light also have 120 calories, the same amount as extra virgin olive oil. These oils are not any lighter in terms of calories, but they are more highly processed to lighten the flavor and remove acid from inferior oils. Virgin olive oil is then added for flavor.

Health Benefits

Olive oil of any grade is healthy oil. It is primarily composed of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, the so-called good fats. Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidants such as vitamins E and K, flavonoids, squalene and polyphenols that neutralize free radicals, lower bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of cancer.
