Alkaline is referred to as a base, which is significant for neutralizing body acidity levels and maintaining consistent pH balance. Potential of hydrogen, or pH, level reflects the amount of hydrogen in your blood, which is important for regulating body chemistry. The Mayo Clinic says that if your body blood acid level is not balanced by alkaline, your health is severely affected. Normal pH is between 7.35 and 7.45 alkaline, and anything below 7.0 represents acidosis, or too acidic of an environment to sustain life. In the event of acidosis, the body requires an increase of alkaline to maintain pH balance.
Step 1
Drink black currant tea. The black currant is the edible berry of a shrub, used for its antioxidant and nutrient properties. Black currant is also a food with alkaline and, when ingested, raises the alkaline pH of the body. Drink a glass of black currant tea daily or eat foods, such as cereal or oatmeal, containing the berry.
Step 2
Start drinking more water each day. MayoClinic.com says that drinking plain water improves body acidity. However, you can also choose alkaline water to neutralize acid. Alkaline water has a higher pH level and the benefit of slowing bone loss.
Step 3
Eat vegetables and fruits. High-alkaline foods include broccoli, raisins and almonds. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into your meals and as snacks to raise alkaline pH.
Step 4
Avoid eating animal proteins. Meats such as beef, lamb and pork contain high acidity. Increase your alkaline by decreasing the amount of meat you ingest daily. Cut back to healthy meats such as salmon, tuna or chicken twice a week to prevent acidosis.
Step 5
Use baking soda and water to neutralize acid. In the event of high acid in your body, mix 2 tsp. of baking soda and 1 cup of water, then drink the solution. This mix will temporarily increase alkaline pH. Consult with your physician before use. Over-the-counter antacids are also an option for raising alkaline temporarily.
Tips and Warnings
- Acidosis, or high acid and low alkaline, is a significant medical condition requiring treatment by a physician.
- Too much alkaline in your body results in low carbon dioxide in the blood and health complications, according to Medline Plus.
