Rules for Losing Belly Fat

Belly fat is often a sign of serious health problems, specifically diabetes and heart disease. That being said, there are a few ways to conquer the bulge around the middle, including diet and exercise modifications to get you on the path toward greater health.

Cardio

Cardiovascular exercise is the best fat burner around. However, you'll want to perform exercises that target your muscles and tone them while getting your heart rate up. A few good examples include swimming, running and biking. These cardio exercises require repetitive movement, which firm up your muscles and burn fat, revealing toned abs beneath that belly fat.

Crunches

Crunches are a must for conquering belly fat. Several repetitions per day are necessary to tone those muscles so once you burn fat through cardiovascular exercise, your tight abs will be revealed. A simple crunch merely involves lying on the floor with your arms on your chest and knees bent. Then, lift your shoulders off the ground, really tightening your abdominal muscles as you do so. Don't strain your neck. Hold for a moment, then release by lowering back to the starting position.

Leg Lifts

Another thing you must do to lose belly fat is the leg lift. Leg lifts tone up your lower abdominal muscles, which are often stubborn to flatten. To do this exercise, lie on the ground on your back and put your arms out at your sides. Lift your legs off the ground by squeezing your thighs together. Hold your legs up for a moment, before lowering them back to the floor with control. Repeat as many times as you can, slowly increasing the number of repetitions over time.

Avoid Certain Foods

Certain foods really go against your desire to burn belly fat and instead help your body hold onto fat. That's definitely not what you want. Some foods to avoid include alcohol, caffeine and complex carbohydrates, all of which are either difficult to digest or encourage your body to hold onto water weight.

Eat Fat-Burning Foods

Foods that you should eat more of are those that actually help your body shed pounds, particularly in the midsection. You'll want to drink plenty of water, which helps flush fat from your body, plus eat fruits that are high in vitamin C, a vitamin known to increase your body's ability to burn fat. Soybeans are another good choice as they contain lecithin, a substance that prevents cells from absorbing fat. Finally, lean proteins like salmon or tuna allow you to get the nutrients you need without all the added calories, fat and cholesterol.
