1. Where it all Began
The Master Cleanse program, also known as the lemonade diet, was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, but has gained popularity in recent years. A method of detoxification, the Master Cleanse is thought to both prevent and help cure various diseases, including digestive disorders, chronic headaches, colds and flu and more. Additionally, weight loss is a sure benefit of the cleanse. Remember that as in any weight loss of detoxification program, you should consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, particularly if you are diabetic. Additionally, lemons are high in acid, therefore you should not perform a Master Cleanse if you have an ulcer.
2. 10 Days to a Cleaner You
The amount of time recommended for the detox diet is 10 days. After about 7 to 10 days your body's protein stores will have been used, therefore it is important to take extreme caution when performing the Master Cleanse for longer periods of time. Because any detoxification process may include uncomfortable side effects, such as irritability, headaches, body odor, bad breath and weakness, you may consider taking a short break from work during your cleanse.
3. Mixing up Your Master Cleanse
The basics of the lemon cleanse include the elimination of solid foods, while subsisting on a lemonade recipe. Each day mix 2 tbs. of fresh lemon or lime juice, 2 tbs. of pure, organic, grade B maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne pepper in 10 oz. of water. Drink as much of the lemonade as you like throughout the day, drinking a minimum of 16 oz.
4. Help Your Body Flush
Because you will not be taking in any solid foods, there will be no fiber to help you eliminate wastes. Therefore it is important that you drink a solution of salt and water. Mix 2 tsp. of un-iodized sea salt and one quart of lukewarm water, shaking well and drinking the entire quart. The flush will wash your entire digestive system, clearing out impacted plaque, mucus and debris from the intestines as well as any parasites that may be present.
5. Gently Breaking the Fast
Be careful not to shock your system when coming off of the Master Cleanse fast. Begin by adding orange juice to your lemonade, replacing half of the water. After about two days, you can begin to drink clear soups and on the third day can begin adding vegetables to the soups. On the fourth day you may include a fresh salad and fruits, but wait at least five days to begin eating bread, dairy products and meats.
