Traditionally, linden flowers were steeped in a tea and used to relieve anxiety-related indigestion, irregular heartbeat and vomiting. Linden is now used in cough and cold remedies. The active ingredients in linden promote sweating. This may help treat people with fevers. There is little reliable, scientific evidence on linden's effectiveness. Linden may also be called common lime, European lime, Tilia cordata or Tilia platyphyllos.

Cough and Cold

Linden acts as a natural sedative and antispasmodic, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. These effects help soothe the symptoms of a cough and cold by reducing spasms that cause coughing and by encouraging rest. Use 1 to 2 tsp. of flowers in 8 oz. of water. Steep covered for 20 minutes. Drink three cups of hot tea daily.

Pulmonary Edema

Pulmonary edema is a serious condition, often caused by heart failure. It is a buildup of fluid in the lungs. The University of Maryland Medical Center lists linden tea as beneficial in reducing excess fluid in the lungs and suggests 1 to 2 cups of tea per day. Steep 2g of dried flowers in 1 cup of boiling water. Strain and cool. Linden is not recommended if you take diuretics, also known as water pills.

Dysphagia

Dysphagia is a medical term used to describe difficulty swallowing. This condition may also include feeling like there is something stuck in the throat. A combination of linden, skullcap and valerian herbs in a tea preparation is suggested by the University of Maryland Medical Center to improve digestion, decrease anxiety and decrease spasms that can lead to difficulty swallowing.
