White rice is often served with Chinese entrees to provide additional calories and complement the meal. White rice is typically steamed until the granule becomes fluffy and saturated with water.
Calories
A typical serving of white rice is one cup, or 158 grams. Each serving packs 205 calories, the Calorie Facts website calculates. Carbohydrates contribute about 187 calories to that total, while protein contributes 18 calories.
Nutritional Information
One serving of white rice packs more than 20 percent each of the daily recommended values for iron, folate, selenium and manganese, Calorie Facts reports. There is also 17 percent of the recommended daily value for thiamin and 12 percent of the recommended daily value for niacin per serving.
Considerations
White rice is an excellent source of some vitamins and minerals; however, it is missing key vitamins such as vitamins A, C, D and K. Vegetables and meats make great complements to rice because they typically contain the vitamins white rice does not have; however, remember that when you eat additional food, you increase the overall calorie content of the meal. Brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, according to the Mayo Clinic, and makes an excellent substitute for white rice.
