Kettlebells have become a popular workout tool that can be used in the gym or at home. They are more versatile than dumbbells and just as beneficial. Before purchasing kettlebells for home use, you should familiarize yourself with the difference between pro-style and regular or classic kettlebells to understand which is best for you.

History

Kettlebells originated in Russia, a country with a history of placing a high value on physical strength. Traditionally, kettlebells were made of cast iron. Kettlebells are intended for strength, agility, endurance and balance training. Kettlebell workouts typically consist of forceful movements involving the whole body, which challenges the cardiovascular system as well as the muscular. Kettlebells have been in Russia for many years: however, they weren't introduced into the United States until 2000.

Classic

Classic-style kettlebells increase in size as they increase in weight. This size increase could cause you to be forced to change your stance or position when performing an exercise when you increase weight. Classic kettlebells are made of cast iron with a powder coating, which can chip with wear and tear. However, this chipping only impacts the cosmetics of the kettlebell, not the functionality.

Pro-Style

Pro-style or pro-grade kettlebells are uniform in size, no matter the weight. With this uniform size comes a slimmer handle, which can reduce your fatigue when performing long sets. Pro-grade kettlebells are internationally uniform. This would only be important if you plan on comparing your kettlebell lifting to pros around the world. Pro-grade kettlebells are made out of steel, which makes them more durable than the classic kettlebells.

Considerations

If you are a novice kettlebell lifter or are planning to purchase kettlebells for at-home use only, the classic kettlebells are likely the best choice for you. Classic-style can be much more inexpensive than pro-grade kettlebells. However, for regular kettlebell use and comfort, you may find it worth the extra money to upgrade to pro-grade. Another inexpensive option can be homemade kettlebells, as there are many free do-it-yourself instructions for kettlebells available on the Internet.

Purchasing

Kettlebells have gained widespread popularity in recent years and are now available at your local superstore, though with a minimal selection. Sports stores are likely to have a wider selection available, possibly even including pro-grade kettlebells. As is most everything, kettlebells are also available on the Internet, but be aware the shipping will most likely be costly.
