Maintaining, losing or gaining weight always comes down to the amount of calories you take in versus the amount of calories you expend. The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans estimates the daily caloric requirement for different age groups based on physical activity levels.
Definition of a Calorie
A calorie is a unit of energy. Your body uses this energy to function. However, when you take in more calories than you body needs, it will store the calories as fat.
Females
According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the amount of calories a female burns every day varies depending on age and activity level. Sedentary females between the ages of 19 and 30 burn around 2,000 calories a day. Moderately active females between the ages of 19 and 30 burn 2,000 to 2,200 calories a day. Active females between 19 and 30 burn around 2,400 calories a day. These numbers drops as you age past 30.
Males
The amount of calories a male burns everyday differs from a female and varies depending on age and activity level. Sedentary males between the ages of 19 and 30 burn around 2,400 calories a day. Moderately active males between the ages of 19 and 30 burn 2,600 to 2,800 calories a day. Active males between 19 and 30 burn around 3,000 calories a day, according to the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These numbers also drop with age.
