Weight Watchers was founded by Jean Nidetch in the 1960s. She started inviting her friends to discuss their weight problems at her home in Queens, New York, and since then Weight Watchers has expanded into a worldwide network and onto the Internet. While Weight Watchers doesn't provide a free diet plan per se, plenty of free diet and fitness information is available on their website that includes ideas about food, recipes and workout suggestions.
Plan
Most people find it difficult to lose weight because they focus on restricting food rather than making an overall change in lifestyle. The Weight Watchers philosophy is based on four core principals or "four pillars" as the company calls them: Healthy weight loss, fits into your life, informed choices and a holistic view. They emphasize developing healthy habits in a supportive environment, while choosing the foods you enjoy to stay satisfied.
Food
The Weight Watchers website offers free recipes, and tips for shopping and eating out. You'll notice the company assigns a point system to food. High fiber/low fat foods have a low point value, whereas low fiber/high fat foods have a high value. Members are given a customized number of points they can use each day, which helps them learn portion control and encourages eating a healthier diet.
Fitness
The fitness and health section offers free exercise demos, workout ideas and advice on everything from getting a better night's rest, to looking good and lowering your cholesterol. There are also a number of free personal assessment tools available that include BMI and healthy weight range calculators.
Meetings
If you interested in taking a closer look at Weight Watchers you can attend a free meeting. The group sessions include a confidential weigh-in and work for both men and women. Meetings are held all over the country and are generally easy to find close to your home. They are designed to be fun and conversational, though there is never any pressure to participate.
Membership
If you want to join Weight Watchers, you can create a personalized account and sign up online for their three-month savings plan for $5 a week.
