Online List of High Carbs

An article published in "Science Daily" recently raised a question about carbohydrates and their connection to heart disease. Recent information from the Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine and the Heart Institute of Sheba Medical Center found that foods that were high on the glycemic index or high in carbohydrates actually distended the arteries. This constant aggravation of the arteries can lead to heart disease. You don't need to cut all carbs from your diet, but choosing carefully and knowing which foods are highest in carbs can help you make better choices.

Potatoes

Potatoes are high on the list of foods with the highest amount of carbs. While it is a vegetable, it's a starchy one, and a small Russet potato that weight 5 oz. packs up to 30 grams of carbs for one tiny potato.

Grapenuts Cereal

While Grapenuts cereal is usually touted as a healthy alternative cereal for those who enjoy a healthier lifestyle, it is packed with carbohydrates, which may not be the best way to start your day. One serving of one cup of Grapenuts has 22 grams of carbs and rates a whopping 78 on the glycemic index.

Brown Rice

Brown rice packs quite a few carbohydrates per serving. While still being a more nutrient-rich substitution for the typically nutrient-void white rice, brown rice still has quite a high number of carbs. A three quarters of a cup serving has 38 grams of carbs, a carb cutter's nightmare.

Spaghetti

Spaghetti, and other pastas for that matter, are very starchy and high in carbohydrates. It's why many athletes load up on pasta before a big event; it gives them a quick burst of energy in a short amount of time. It could have something to do with the fact that three quarters of a cup of cooked spaghetti, without sauce, has 44 grams of carbs.

Raisins

Raisins are usually given as a healthier alternative to more sugary foods. But the natural sugar found in raisins is rarely taken into consideration. A serving of unsweetened, natural raisins that is about a quarter of a cup gives you 45 grams of carbs, making raisins a better sweet treat than a health snack.

Oatmeal

While oatmeal is a good way to start your day, as it is packed with fiber and protein, those watching their carbohydrate intake might want to check the nutritional information of their favorite brand. Even one cup plain of oatmeal has 26 grams of carbs in it, without the added sweeteners and flavors.

Bagels

A bagel is a more dense version of regular white bread, so it has more carbs than your typical sandwich bread. One plain white bagel has 35 grams of carbs. Add on your favorite spread, and your quick bagel snack could have more carbs than you bargained for.
