The thyroid is an important gland in the body, located at the base of the throat, that helps regulate growth and development, converts iodine found in many foods into hormones and regulates metabolism. Various herbs can enhance the function of the thyroid, as well as promote health of the gland, and prevent or reduce illness or medical conditions that may affect the function of the thyroid. Herbs that help the thyroid can be found in your local natural or health-food store, as well as in drugstores or even grown in your own backyard.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha has been used for thousands of years in Asia and India to reduce stress and increase energy and thyroid hormone levels. The herb contains antioxidant properties that reduce the number of lipids or fats that gather in the liver, which helps maintain proper weight. Ashwagandha also helps prevent the production of cortisol, a stress-relieving chemical, which when combined with any type of thyroid malfunction can lead to weight gain.
Chamomile
Chamomile contains amino acids that help calm stress and soothe the body. The herb offers support to the thyroid gland so that the gland does not become stressed or overworked. Adults can take approximately 400 to 1,600 mg a day or one to four cups of tea made from chamomile tea bags.
Bladderwrack
This herb contains iodine, which helps to improve thyroid function. However, a careful balance of iodine must be maintained by the body to prevent either hypo- or hyper- (over or under) stimulation of the thyroid gland, so this herb should be taken under the direction of a physician familiar with alternative medicine. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), adults can take 200 to 600 mg a day.
Hawthorne
Hawthorne has been used for hundreds of years to help lower cholesterol levels in the blood, taking a bit of stress off the thyroid gland in the same function. Take according to supplement or package instructions.
