Sugar cookies may seem a sweet Christmas tradition, but they can be detrimental to a healthy diet. They typically contain high amounts of fat and sugar, both of which need to be a minimal part of a healthy diet.
Identification
While recipes vary, store-bought sugar cookie dough contains 60 calories per precut cookie. A typical serving is two cookies, according to most packages. Two cookies provide 120 calories, or 6 percent of your daily caloric intake based on a 2,000 calorie diet, in a single serving.
Potential
Besides having a high number of calories, sugar cookies also contain 6 g of fat in a single serving of two cookies. Of that fat, about 1.5 percent is saturated fat. The total fat is just more than 9 percent of your daily fat intake.
Theories/Speculation
A diet high in fats and sugar may contribute to metabolic syndrome, especially if you already struggle with glucose tolerance, states a 2010 study by M. Amini and colleagues and published in "Nutrition." Metabolic syndrome is a group of symptoms that, when they appear together, increase your risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes.
