There are several conditions that may cause dry, crusty skin on the scalp, such as psoriasis, eczema, scalp acne and seborrheic dermatitis. While these conditions are not likely to affect your overall health, unsightly flaking can negatively affect your self-esteem and self-image. If you are experiencing dry or crusty skin on your scalp, you should consult your physician to definitively determine the underlying cause.

Significance

The skin on the scalp may become dry because of the use of harsh chemicals or by not rinsing the hair thoroughly. When this happens, an accumulation of dead cells on the scalp may build up, increasing the chances of infection. There are also a number of skin disorders that can also cause dry, crusty patches on the scalp.

Considerations

The most common causes for this condition are psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, scalp acne, eczema and ringworm. Psoriasis is the only one of these conditions that cannot be cured. However, it can be managed with topical and oral medications, but is prone to flare-ups. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, even though it is not known what causes these flare-ups, they may be related to stress, diet or the weather. According to NetDoctor, ringworm of the scalp is a fungal skin disorder that causes scaly, itchy patches on the skin and localized hair loss.

Features

Although each of these conditions causes a dry, crusty scalp, their symptoms are slightly different. Scalp acne causes pimples and dry skin, which may form scabs. Psoriasis causes a build-up of encrusted layers of skin, which can be itchy and sore. When it occurs on the scalp, it can be mild to severe. Seborrheic dermatitis causes, itchy, scaly, red skin and may cause dandruff. Although it is not a harmful disorder, it can be unsightly. Eczema causes crusty, flaking skin, and may lead to localized hair loss.

Treatments

Treatments vary depending on the condition. Scalp acne can be treated with the same salicylic acid products you would use to treat acne on the face. According to MayoClinic.com, seborrheic dermatitis can easily be treated with over-the-counter shampoos containing one of the following ingredients: coal tar, salicylic acid, ciclopirox, ketoconazole or selenium sulfide. Symptoms of scalp eczema can be eased with shampoos that contain soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, tea tree oil, or neem oil. Psoriasis is somewhat more difficult to treat but responds to with salicylic acid and tar products.

Warning

If you suffer from scalp acne, you should avoid using acne products containing benzoyl peroxide on your scalp. According to Acne.org, this should be avoided as it may cause hair bleaching. Medications containing salicylic acid may also be beneficial for treating scalp acne, though they take longer to clear the condition than other treatments.
