Sugar -- white, brown or powdered -- is a favorite part of the American diet. Sugar is used in almost every kind of food from barbecue sauce to chocolate chip cookies. The number of calories in a pound of sugar depends on the type used.

A pound of granulated sugar contains about 1,540 calories, while a pound of brown sugar has approximately 1,670 calories. Powdered sugar, also known as confectioner’s sugar, has about 936 calories per pound.

Granulated sugar and powdered sugar have few nutrients beyond carbohydrates. Brown sugar, however, has trace amounts of vitamins and minerals because of its molasses content.

Americans consume approximately 22 teaspoons of sugar each day, according to the American Heart Association. Since there are about 96 teaspoons in a pound, the average American eats a pound of sugar every 4.3 days.
