Lumps on the skin can vary in color and texture. Symptoms can include redness, tenderness, pain, itchiness and inflammation. These bumps can also be full of pus that is visible on the tip of the lump. Because they can be embarrassing and damaging to the self-esteem, it is important to understand the causes and treatments of facial lumps.

Causes

There are a variety of causes for skin lumps on the face. Acne, which occurs when hair follicles become blocked with oil, can cause lumps such as pustules, whiteheads, blackheads and cysts to form on the facial skin. In addition, KidsHealth.org notes that scaly and pimple-like lumps can occur due to the skin condition eczema. Contact with irritating or allergic substances, such as harsh soaps or detergents can also result in itchy, swollen lumps.

Treatments

To treat facial lumps, Medline Plus suggests washing your face with a gentle cleanser two times a day. This can help remove oil, dirt and makeup, which can block pores and exacerbate both acne and eczema symptoms. Over-the-counter acne products containing ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide can eliminate bacteria growth and excess oil. Eczema facial lumps can also be controlled with an emollient moisturizer. Allergy reactions can be treated with an antihistamine and calamine lotion.

Prevention

Facial lumps can be prevented by shampooing your hair every day and keeping it away from your face. In addition, you should never rub, pick or attempt to pop any facial lumps. This can just spread the infection and cause additional facial lumps and scaring. Greasy makeup and facial products can clog pores so only use formulas that are labeled noncomedogenic, meaning they will not clog pores. To prevent allergic lumps, learn what items provoke a reaction and stay away from them.

Tips

Facial lumps can be triggered by specific conditions and products such as sweating, medications like estrogen, greasy hair and face products, and hormonal fluctuations related to stress and menstrual periods. If unsure of the exact cause of your facial lumps, KidsHealth.org recommends visiting a dermatologist. This type of doctor is specially trained in skin conditions and can help determine the cause and best treatment for lumps on the face.

Warnings

Medline Plus warns that facial lumps on the skin can have complications if left untreated. These can include permanent scars on the face, the development of deep cysts, skin color changes, depression and serious damage to the confidence and self-esteem. In addition, some medications such as retinoic acid cream can cause side effects such as damage to the liver, dry skin and birth defects.
